Introduction to Archives

Archives are the unpublished papers of an individual or the records of an organization preserved because of their enduring value, after they have served their original purpose. Archival materials can provide a wealth of information, but they can be tricky to navigate. This workshop is designed for graduate students in all disciplines who, as scholars and teachers, are novice users of archives.

Workshop topics include:

•definitions of the word “archives” and related terms

•archives within a broader historical record

•differences between archives and general academic library collections

•archival collections at Kenneth Spencer Research Library

•descriptive tools for archives, i.e. finding aids

•archival materials in undergraduate courses
